Ceilings

6 October, 2023

Ceilings are a huge part of an interior space because depending on the height, finish, or type of ceiling it can totally change the feeling of the interior space. It is important to keep in mind that as interior designers, our job is not to handle the structure of the ceiling, however, our job is to choose the finish of the ceiling. One of the codes that is important to follow is the Suspended Acoustical Panel Ceilings (SAPC), This code is mostly for commercial spaces and it allows space for duck work, sprinklers, electrical work, and noise control. The recommended space is 2'0"x 2'0" or 2'0"x 4'0"

The image to the left is an example of the cathedral/sloped ceiling. These ceiling types are special because they mimic the shape of the exterior structure of the roof. Some pros for this ceiling includes, adding height to the cieling, and creating a more spacious interior. Some cons of the cathedral/sloped ceilings include, a lack of sunlight, and can create issues with heating and cooling in the room.

Some other ceiling types include, Gypsum Board Wall. This wall type is a directly applied ceiling attaches to the building structure. Another common type is plaster ceiling which is applied over a three coat system over lath. Plaster ceilings can also produce coffered ceilings and ceiling medallions as well.

A popular ceiling design used in commercial design are Exposed Mechanical Ceilings. These ceiling types show the AC ducts, electical, and other mechanical systems throughout the building. These ceiling require work to be done with the HVAC designer to ensure a convient orientation. Many times the ceilings will be painted the same color to draw less attention to the mechanical work above.

Application:

The ceiling the the left is a great example of efficient ceiling and light design. The design of the ceiling incorporates the lights in a way that is hiding the electrical work yet also providing and efficient and cool look the the interior space.
The shape of the curves of the gypsum board helps communicate the direction of the hallway as well and bring the light to the places where it is needed the most.

The image to the right is an effective design because of the reflective materials that reflect the daylight all over the interior space. The hanging tile panels are the same level of the lights as well and this is helps hide the lights so they are not as notable and this helps the daylight brighten up the rest of the room.

  1. Eva,

I really liked your blog on ceilings. In your first paragraph, your deep dive on specifics of ceilings was very interesting and informative. I really like the cathedral slope ceiling choices that are used in interior spaces, I feel like they add a whole new element! I really liked your first image in your application segment, it is very different than other ceilings that I have seen.

  2. Eva,

I really enjoyed your summary, and I agree with Izzy, the deep dive of the specifics of ceilings was very detailed and easy for anyone to understand. The organization of it was done well and I appreciated the fact that, even though the chapter and your blog was a bit shorter, you still captured all the necessary information for anyone to comprehend ceiling systems. Your analysis of a ceiling system was also very good, and I think the fact that you explained why each example you gave was an effective design, was a nice touch.

  3. Eva,

I thought you did a good job highlighting the important aspects of the book and various materials used for ceilings -- primarily SAPC, gypsum board, and plaster as materials. I think you touched on some good design points with each. I loved the two ceilings you chose to document! They were both inspiring spaces, and educated me on ceiling designs to consider incorporating in the future. Good job!

  4. Eva,

Your blog on ceilings was a great read. You gave a thorough review of the significance of ceilings in interior spaces, highlighting how the selection of ceiling finish can have a big impact on the atmosphere. A useful addition that you demonstrated was the expertise in the subject is the discussion of the Suspended Acoustical Panel Ceilings (SAPC) code and its importance in commercial environments. I like how the many ceiling kinds are presented, with advantages and disadvantages for each, so that we could easily understand the factors that go into designing a ceiling. A standout is the part on practical applications with accompanying photographs, which provides specific illustrations of effective ceiling and light design. Great job!
